Hope has Wings...

This post is very difficult for me to write...I have been struggling with it for some time. There is  a silent genocide/gendercide happening right now against Indian women. Over 50 million girls and women missing. Just gone, killed, disappeared. Entire generations and martilineal lines...vanished! That number is actually a very conservative one; a more realistic estimate is 60-100 million. How are we killed? Sex-selective abortions, female infanticide, dowry deaths, general neglect and starvation. Why are we killed? Because in Indian culture, females are not only devalued, we are considered an economic liability, a burden. Where is the Goddess now? But hope has wings...find out more about this atrocity right here, sign the petition (it just takes a few minutes). I am so thankful that I have all the freedoms I do, that my daughter will have access to an education, clean water, food, health, the right to vote...the right to live. Hope has wings...something has to change.

As a mother of a Chinese born daughter, sadly I am all too aware of the dis-valuing of women in far too many cultures. I had heard a little bit about India when researching international adoption (everyone likes to point out China's policies, but so much goes hidden in many cultures; what baffles me is how the mistreatment of half the world's population really goes uncommented upon. Even in my own university world, the diversity training we had was so flippant in regards to stereotyped attitudes towards women and when I spoke up, people looked at me like I had 2 heads.)

I am signing the petition - thank you for bringing this to light.

(on a very different note: I read over on Blue Moon Mama that Tara has been ill; if this is her first year in daycare it is very normal for her to pick up lots of colds & viruses. As hard as it is, she is strengthening her immune system. The plus side is when she is older and in school, she won't get sick so often. The kids who are kept home spend their first school year going through all these illnesses. My daughter was sick the first year of preschool, second year she maybe was sick twice? And healthy this past year with only sniffles. It gets better! )

Hi Soraya! I thought I was following you, but I have been missing out. This is really devastating! We are so "insulated" over here it seems. I am going to sign the petition - thanks for bringing it to our attention!

I'll be signing the petition too. It rips my heart out to think anyone could look at their child as a burden. Every child deserves to be loved & cared for as a miracle from god.

Throughout so much of the world women are treated as inferior beings. It truly sickens me. Those of us lucky enough to live in countries were women are not oppressed need to work to better the lives of our sisters in other lands. Thanks for this reminder!!!

Is Tara feeling better & how are you holding up?

I will say it here. Nothing woman will do can change the rails that a patriarchal society has laid down. Until the day comes that a strong woman living somewhere under such overt oppression, wakes up in the night, takes a razor from under her pillow and draws it across her oppressors throat. It will take 100 million women, one solstice night, to tip the balance back to sanity. Do we as a race deserve such heroines? Probably not. Forgive my rage if you can.
