birthdays + more

(yesterday...Princess Tara turns 3!!)
Yesterday was Tara's birthday...I just can't believe how grown up my little girl is!! It was full of blessings + wishes...we had the most love-filled day. I had planned on writing a happy happy blog post full of birthday pics but...this is the sad truth. Since I wrote this blog post last week...my heart has been filled with a heavy sadness at all the little girls in the world who won't even have a first birthday. I am not trying to be morbid...but it's simply the truth. So even as we celebrate...there is a part of me that feels despair + sadness at what it means to be a girl in so many parts of the world. I also read this post right here by Lis and can totally commiserate with her feelings. I agree with her that we, as mothers,  have to be strong...and pass on that strength to our daughters. So...while I wish my Tara a happy birthday..I also wish that there were more little girls who would get the opportunity to celebrate theirs.

You have a huge heart, Soraya...yes, essentially as a mother, we care about all children. Lovely post. xo Jane

Yes, if all our wishes could come true... what a beautiful world it would be.

I suppose the one positive is we can be be truly appreciate of the gift of our daughters and the opportunity to celebrate their being here. Sweet Tara! Such a beautiful girl and I know you are teaching her so many important lessons of the heart. Enjoy these magical days ... so many adventures ahead for both of you!

My friend shared this bit of wisdom "The duty of privilege is absolute integrity." I am chewing on what that means for me ...

She looks like a little princess in that photo. Very very cute. The years definitely fly by way faster when you have children - suddenly they are teenagers! Enjoy and cherish the time you have with Tara! Don't let sadness overshadow this precious time - although I can understand your feelings.

As I sit here watching my own beautiful little girl sleeping I just can't comprehend anyone thinking that she was worthless or a burden and the thought of anyone harming her in any way makes me feel sickened & filled with anger yet I know that in many countries in this world little girls are being neglected, abused and killed (often by their own parents!!) for no reason other than that they were "unlucky" enough to be born female. It is disgusting. I wish I could adopt them all.

Your Tara is so beautiful & getting so grown up. I'm glad you all had a wonderful day celebrating the anniversary of her birth. She is a treasure!
